We are excited to announce the start of our Kɔɪli Korner! Here we feature the real kɔɪlies (girls and guys) that use our butters every day. They share their hair journeys, regimens and experiences with kɔɪli. 17 year old high school student Maryam is in the seat this week.
Introduce yourself My name is Maryam Usman and I'm from Nigeria. I grew up in Nigeria for 11 years and now live in South Africa. I am in matric this year.
How long have you had natural hair? I have transitioned for about six months now. My sister and I decided to try going natural after we saw our family friend/big sister’s natural hair and how long and healthy it was. We liked that she could go from kɔɪli to straight and back all within a day without a relaxer.
How would you describe your texture? I would describe the texture of my hair as very frizzy because it is really thick. I have really struggled to brush through it in the past but it isn’t so bad now that I use the kɔɪli butter in my routine.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month, and the rationale behind your various styling decisions. I mostly have my hair in braids or weaves because I don't really have time to style my hair every day before going to school. I wash my hair every Saturday when I don't have any braids or weaves and wash it every 2 weeks if I have braids on. Oh and as you can see, I love my bandannas :)
Describe your favourite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style My go to hair styles when I don't have time to style would be having my old twist out in an up-do or to tie my hair in a bun.
How do you combat shrinkage? (if you do) I always do a twist out every time I wash my hair to stretch it. This helps me prevent any heat damage from hair dryers and I find that twist outs are a good protective style for me.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require extra care and attention? My problem areas are my edges due to thinning from braids and weaves.
Which of the koili butters have you used and for how long? I use the Shea Castor and Avo butter. I've be using it for about three to four months and I find that it really helps with my edges and deeply conditions my hair.
Tell us how you use it and how often I apply the kɔɪli butter on my scalp and around my edges and of course directly to my hair. I use it every two days.
What do you like most about your butter? I like the smell and the way it mosturizes my hair and gives it great shine!
